Le previsioni sarebbero sbagliate. Il mondo non finirà il 2012, ma 24 anni dopo: nel 2036. Precisamente il giorno di Pasqua. La Terra sarebbe infatti minacciata da un enorme asteroide, che rischierebbe di impattare contro il nostro pianeta, causando danni probabilmente fatali. A sostenerlo non è una profezia, ma uno scienziato: il capo dell’Agenzia spaziale russa Anatoly Perminov.
La minaccia ha anche un nome: Apophis, come il dio egiziano, detto anche “il distruttore”. E’ dal 2004 che se ne parla, ma gli scienziati americani l’hanno sempre considerata molto remota. Perminov, però non è d’accordo: secondo il russo nel 2029 l'asteroide potrebbe avvicinarsi così tanto alla Terra da essere visibile ad occhio nudo. A quel punto avremmo 7 anni di tempo per “fare qualcosa”.
La Russia organizzerà un vertice tra le più importanti agenzie spaziali mondiali. Obiettivo: inviare una navetta spaziale e distruggere Apophis, così come nel fim Armageddon. “La vita degli esseri umani è in pericolo”, dice Perminov e aggiunge: “Dovremmo cercare di prevenire l’impatto, piuttosto che stare ad aspettare il disastro con le mani in mano”.
Ora Apophis rischia di “oscurare” anche il “mito” del 21 dicembre 2012: la data in cui, secondo aspettative diffuse attraverso siti internet, libri e documentari TV, dovrebbe verificarsi la fine del mondo. Tali attese si basano sulla fine di uno dei cicli del calendario Maya.
