Quello del MoMA è un riconoscimento ad un simbolo che è entrato nell’uso quotidiano di milioni di persone in ogni parte del pianeta, un simbolo, quella della “chiocciolina”, che è stato utilizzato per la prima volta (per come lo conosciamo noi) nel 1971 per inviare la prima email da Ray Tomlinson. Oggi lo si usa anche su Twitter, ma la “@” è universalmente conosciuta come parte integrante degli indirizzi email.
In passato si hanno notizie dell’utilizzo di questo simbolo addirittura a partire dal sesto secolo, si pensa che la chiocciolina derivi dal latino ma dal momento che è soltanto un simbolo, nel corso dei secoli ha cambiato significato a seconda dei luoghi e degli utilizzi a cui è stato sottoposto, quindi è stato utilizzato sia come unità di misura che per simboleggiare anfore e contenitori.
