Google Chrome OS si svela al mondo, e fa sembrare gli altri sistemi operativi vecchi dinosauri. Il browser diventa sistema operativo e il sistema operativo diventa browser. I primi dettagli su Google Chrome OS, basato su Linux e il browser Chrome, sono stati presentati nella notte.
L’azienda ha annunciato il progetto Chromium OS, che offre da oggi, a tutti, il codice sorgente di Chrome OS sviluppato finora. Google coinvolge nella creazione del proprio sistema operativo la comunità di sviluppatori open source, una mossa che rientra nel proprio stile e che farà sicuramente aumentare l’attenzione degli appassionati.
L’obiettivo è avere Chrome OS pronto per il terzo trimestre 2010, quando si prevede sarà preinstallato su alcuni prodotti – inizialmente si rivolgerà ai netbook. Per ottenere Chrome OS, infatti, dovrete necessariamente acquistare un prodotto che lo integri, perché Google non prevede di renderlo disponibile per il download. I prodotti con Chrome OS preinstallato non integreranno un hard disk, bensì solo SSD. Secondo Google è la scelta migliore per assicurare un’esperienza più rapida e migliore.
Chrome OS promette un avvio quasi istantaneo (la demo si è avviata in sette secondi circa) e un’esperienza tutta incentrata sull’online: tutti i dati sono online, “nella nuvola” (cloud), ogni applicazione è un’applicazione web e il modello di sicurezza è quello browser. Ogni dato è crittografato. Nel caso perdiate o vi venga rubato il netbook, non perderete i vostri dati e applicazioni: tutto è salvato online.
Le varie dimostrazioni hanno messo in luce un’interfaccia utente che è ancora in via di sviluppo, la presenza di un player video nativo e un modello di navigazione a schede che offre rapidamente le applicazioni – che naturalmente si avvieranno online. Per quanto concerne la sicurezza, tutto avviene in una sandbox – come nel browser Chrome. Per quanto riguarda la tecnologia, Google punta a offrire il meglio disponibile attualmente, quindi una grande integrazione con lo standard HTML5. Verranno comunque implementati anche i progetti WebGL, O3D, Native Client e le novità emergenti più interessanti. Insomma, il lavoro che Google sta compiendo a compartimenti stagni, sarà riversato in Chrome OS e anche nel browser Chrome.
